Do Not Flush Wipes, Masks, and Gloves

As people stock up on Cleaning Wipes, Toilet paper, Masks, gloves, sanitary napkins, and diapers, etc., we must remember to not discard them into the toilet.  Manufacturers market wet-wipe products as “flushable” but these products do not break down in water.

We are also losing a lot of these products in the streets, as they wash down into our sewer drains.

KC Water’s wastewater treatment plants use special equipment to pull plastics, wipes and other items that should not be flushed, out of the wastewater and into the trash before water treatment.

the only thing that the City of Kansas City wants down the toilets are the 3-P’s: Pee, Poop, and toilet Paper,  These substances all dissolve in water, which is what the treatment plant was built for. Plastics and the wipes are actually made of a plastic felt material. They are inorganic, and they will never break down into the environment, just like any kind of plastic. These plastics stay in the environment forever.

Many People have also flushed Face masks, hair coverings, and gloves made of plastic and rubber, down the toilet, instead of being tossed into the trash cans, during the COVID-19 pandemic. We must be mindful and considerate of not only our own wellbeing, but also the wellbeing of other's in our environment of 478,000 people receiving water services in Kansas City, MO.
